Peter Reffells Weekly Report - 13/07/2018

Results for w/c 9th July

On Monday we kicked off the week with a ‘Dusty Bin’ 3, 2, 1. In first place, coming in with 83 points were Geoff Biggerstaff, Rod Doel, John Conway and yours truly. Geoff (Hurst?) scoring a 3 for 5 points on the seventh and John getting back to back birdies on the 4th and 5th certainly carried us to victory.

Continuing this week’s football theme, I eluded recently to one of our members Hendrick (Ajax) Oldenziel (Picture Bellow). At the age of 10 ‘Henny’ was invited to become a member of the AFC Ajax football academy. Working his way through the ranks he was rewarded in 1962 with a professional contract. Around this time a certain Johan Cruyff, was just starting his career at the club and they became close friends. Due to national service, Hendrick was also selected for the Dutch military eleven and competed in international tournaments. Under contract until 1965 with Ajax he made half a dozen first team appearances before being transferred to another Amsterdam club, Blauw-Wit, who played in our equivalent of the Championship league. After one final move to RCH, he played alongside Johan Neeskins, who was to later become a legend at Barcelona.

Wednesday’s Stableford had a slight variation this week, with each player having two ‘jokers’ to play. We nominated beforehand one hole on the front nine and one on the back where the points scored would be doubled. Taking top slot, with an outstanding 49 points, was John Dobsen. (Picture Bellow). Runner up with 44 points was Alan Douglas. Alan’s tally included an eagle on the 4th hole which netted him 10 points! Bryan Neal, John Shervell and Terry Cullen all scored 43 to get onto the leader board. There were six players sharing the ‘2’s pot this week, far too many to mention!

Friday saw us playing an Alan Ball (sorry, two ball) better ball. The difference this time was that each player had to select just five clubs plus a putter. Two pairs were level at extra time, but after a penalty shoot out , with 48 points, Dave Pulling and Rachael Leckey took the trophy. Dave scoring a 2 for 5 points on the 9th certainly helped. A mention too for Terry Field, he shot seven birdies but was sadly not in the running.

Anyway, if you thought this report was all over, ‘it is now!’
